Making Christmas Special in a Global Pandemic

One thing we could all be sure of this year was that Christmas 2020 was going to be very different from previous years. Back in the Summer revised Christmas events plans were drawn up for all our clients to ensure that we still celebrated Christmas in a memorable way (albeit a socially distanced one).

Castle Quay in Banbury usually works with the Banbury Town Council and Banbury BID to put on an incredible lights switch-on, with its own unique fun fair, music and performances. That obviously couldn’t happen this year but they still wanted to bring some festive magic back to Banbury for all to enjoy. So a magnificent Christmas themed light show was arranged, which was projected onto the Cornhill entrance to Castle Quay from 18 November right up until the New Year. The reception has been incredible.

In Shrewsbury, as with Banbury, we couldn’t hold our usual town lights switch-on event but we still wanted to celebrate the start of Christmas with our shoppers. So we asked our followers to send us videos of their personal Christmas lights being switched on at home, so that we can share these little moments of festive joy with the rest of the community and kick off the month of Christmas with our very own virtual switch-on.

Woking Shopping has a Christmas grotto every year, but because of the COVID-19 restrictions we had to think of other ways of bringing elements of a grotto to shoppers. So a Christmas corner was created, which is a magical socially-distanced place children can visit. A selfie pod allows children to have their photo taken with a virtual Santa for free. Plus, a Christmas vending machine provides an element of gift-giving and support to retailers with shoppers having to spend £40 in order to receive their FREE secret Santa gift in a really fun and original way!

In Harlow we’ve also created our own festive Esty market, which shoppers are flocking to and it’s had a really positive effect on footfall, with people wanting to buy something unique and local.

We were recently tasked with creating the new branding for the Welwyn Garden City BID. The brand has been successfully used across a wide range of collateral including innovative seasonal illuminations. The brand origin comes from the famous fountain located In the heart of the town and it’s flexible design has been adapted for use throughout 2020, culminating in the prominent Christmas display on the exterior of the Howard Centre.
